Massimo is thirty-eight, lives in Cassino, works in an electronics store and is experiencing a moment of depression due to a love story that has just ended. One day in July he goes to Rome to attend a theatrical performance.

After the show she meets Roberto, an old college friend, whom she hasn't seen for many years. He remembered a shy boy, with the dream of becoming a writer. They chat, and Roberto tells him that he is now a salesman and often goes to Cassino, because his girlfriend lives there. The two greet each other, exchange phone numbers and promise to meet again soon.

After two weeks, Roberto is in Cassino and invites Massimo to lunch at the home of his girlfriend Anna, a young twenty-two year old. During lunch Massimo feels a certain tension in the couple, which ends with a fight right in front of him.

One evening Massimo, who is walking around there, almost by chance, sees her go out with a boy. A few days later, Massimo learns that Roberto is killed by death. Massimo is convinced that there is a link between what he saw and that sudden death.

A few days later, a man is arrested. According to his statement, he would have robbed a betting room with Roberto, and at the time of dividing the money an altercation would have arisen which then led to the murder.

Massimo first accepts this explanation until he is contacted by a private investigator, who confesses that Roberto was with him the night of the robbery and that the man with whom Anna is now having an affair is a very very dangerous person. Massimo's suspicions, therefore, move back to Anna who, in a dramatic confrontation with Massimo, confesses that she had asked for Roberto's death because of a story that he had made her read and that had upset her.

In the novel, written in the first person, Roberto's story bursts out in a powerful way while the narrator tries to tell the end of his love story for him still so alive and present.

With La coincidence Edoardo Zambelli has happily found the narrative balance he was looking for in his previous tests. Conceived as an implacable game of misunderstandings and appearances, the novel is resolved in an intertwining of events and encounters which from time to time may be irrelevant or fatal, but are always inscribed in that dimension of destiny which is perhaps the most characteristic feature of the writer. . Coincidence is a detective story that consumes itself, as in the unsurpassed model of Dürrenmatt's Promise (not surprisingly, explicitly mentioned in the text along with many other literary references), but it is also an unforgettable love story: it is the desperate pursuit of Sara, who at some point could even transfigure into Anna, but which eventually vanishes into thin air, like a coincidence that has not had the opportunity to be fulfilled.

Alessandro Zaccuri- author of Little to myself

"The author is young, damn him. Even if not too young, so I withdraw the damned one.
He's also damn good, and this time I'm leaving the adverb. I only happened to read an equally fascinating first work once, and that book was Pugni by Pietro Grossi. In fact, it wasn't even a book yet, it was a typescript looking for a publisher, I had a friend read to me. I was happy when Pietro, not thanks to me, found a publisher.

I'm even happier that Edoardo Zambelli found it, and that The Antagonist came out of the drawer (or wherever he kept it) to reach the readers. It is a powerful book, a book that emanates a strange energy, a kind of black light that illuminates our purgatorial days. " Tullio Avoledo

I, who was lucky enough to read it in preview, can only say this: it is of rare beauty. Facebook
